Student theatre goes international

The International Student Theatre Festival paints the town with explosive young energy.

Turku's year as the cradle of culture continues with the International FIRE AWAY! Student Theatre Festival that kicks off on the 7th of April. The four-day festival is participated by all 14 Student Theatre Union SYTY ry's member theatres as well as the Student Theatre of Pori. For the first time, the festival receives groups also from Stockholm, Tallinn and Vilnius.

"The festival offers a review of the best of student theatres. There is something for everyone: improvisation, a punk musical, miniature plays etc. The prices are student-friendly, too. The weekend also includes a public seminar on the relationship of supply and demand in theatre with speakers who are prominent people in this field," says Venla Heinonen, the festival co-ordinator.

"Student theatres everywhere have got certain freedom and shamelessness which often guarantees interesting and thought-provoking theatre. Such an event in so broad a scale can rarely be experienced in Turku. Now it is possible to see the performances and actors that will be household names in future."

What about exchange students and those who do not speak Finnish, Swedish, Estonian or Lithuanian? "A scene list or summary in English is provided on all plays, so language will not be an obstacle. What is more, the language of theatre is universal, and "Theatrese" can tell the story better than words. One of the best performances I have ever seen was in gibberish which was not even meant to be understood. All the same, the play was magnificent and easy to follow. So do not hesitate to come and see plays in a foreign language – you will be happily surprised," Heinonen assures.
